MUNCIE — Tyler Jenkins is used to breaking up fights in bars, but he has never had upset patrons shoot their guns into the building.
His number came up Saturday when an upset patron fired four shots into the bar around 2:30 a.m.
“I thought it was firecrackers and then felt a piece of glass in my head,” said Jenkins, a bouncer at The Chug, 409 N. Martin St.
Muncie patrol officer Larry Robbins was already in the parking lot next to the Chug when he heard the shots. One bullet went through the front door into the bar and struck a steel beam near where customers were standing.
A bar manager later told police that two patrons who had been kicked out the night before for being too intoxicated had returned early Saturday. One of those men, described as a white male, began shooting at the door and into the building.
About 20 people were inside the bar when the shots were fired. Police have not yet identified the shooter or his companion.
Jenkins, a Ball State University student who served with the Marines in Iraq, was hit by shattered glass but did not require treatment. No one else was injured.
It is the second violent act in the Village during the past week. Last Thursday, a BSU student was attacked and robbed of his wallet as he walked home. The attack happened in the 600 block of North Dill Street about 3:30 a.m. Police are looking for suspects in that case, as well.
“The Chug is usually a pretty laid back place,” Jenkins said.
